DEEP SOUTH:
A part of the South generally defined both culturally and geographically as the "Deep South" includes Alabama, Georgia, Louisianan, Mississippi, South Carolina and sometimes Arkansas, North Carolina and Tennessee.

THE SOUTH:
The South should not be confused with the Southern United States. The Region generally considered "The South" includes the states that seceded from the union to form the Confederate States of America. They include Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, South Carolina, Virginia,

THE MODERN SOUTH (U.S. Census Region):
Also considered part of the "Modern South" are the states of Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri. These were salve states but did not secede with the Confederacy. Oklahoma aligned with the Confederacy but was an Indian Territory and not considered a state. West Virginia was formed by a split from Virginia over a disagreement about secession.

CULTURE:
The South is more unique than any other region in the United States, it has been studied, written about, adored, envied, mimicked and ridiculed more than any other region of the United States. Its inhabitants are strongly patriotic to the United States but also have a strong loyalty to the region and their home state.

Southern Culture is defined by lifestyle, music, literature, cuisine, language, accent, religion, and attitude. Deep rooted southerns are largely descended from early English, Scots-Irish and Welsh settlers and Slaves brought from Africa. Though the Black and White southerners have their own distinctive culture they have much in common and are both distinctively Southern by any definition.
