History Timeline
County seat of Dallas County Alabama:
In the title of his Selma history, Alston Fitts named Selma, "Queen City Of The Black Belt". Selma is in the heart of the western Alabama Black Belt region and is steeped in its history, culture and tradition. Some of Alabama's most significant events took place in Selma and Dallas County.
The City's name was taken from "Songs of Selma." by "Ossian", a blind poet of ancient Caledonia. Selma of Harps was the home of his warrior father, Fingal, Price of ancient Caledonia.
Incorporated in 1820 by the Selma Land Company, Selma is among the oldest cities in Alabama. It is known for its importance as a CSA supply depot during the Civil war and made Civil Rights history as the center for the Voting Rights struggle.
